ALASKA

July 2023

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!! My 60th birthday to be precise. So, I'm going on an epic adventure to ALASKA!!!!!

I'm taking a cruise on Holland America Line through the Alaska Inside Passage starting at Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and stopping at Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and then ending at Whittier, Alaska.

From Whittier, I'm taking a bus tour to Denali National Park (about 300 miles north) and spending 2 nights in Denali, and then returning by train to Anchorage, Alaska.

Along the way, I will be taking excursions at the port stops and visiting sites in the port cities. Cruising through the spectacular Glacier Bay and Prince William Sound. And looking for lots of wildlife!

Alaska became the 49th state in the United States 64 years ago on January 3, 1959. Alaska is the largest US state by area by a huge margin, comprising more total area than the next three largest states (Texas, California, and Montana) combined. Alaska has 34,000 miles of shoreline ... more than the rest of the US states combined.

You can see my travel plan on the map below.

The ship I'm cruising on is ms Nieuw Amsterdam. The ship is 936 feet long, 105 feet wide, and has a capacity of just over 2100 passengers. It's a mid-sized cruise ship.

beachcombing is an attitude, an expressive metaphor for reality, an attraction and adventure, that ranges from the eager inquisitiveness of youth to the more philosophical approach that comes from gaining and spending, and being spent, by the fortunes of life, like the flotsam and jetsam along the shore.
