Buchanan, Virginia
June 2016
I took a trip to Buchanan, Virginia (pronounced Buk-kan-an) to do some kayaking and hiking. I stayed in a little cabin (little but modern) just north of town on Buttons Bluff right on the James River. If you look at the map below, you will see the location of the cabin literally right on the edge of a steep bluff 300 feet above the river. I also got to fly the Phantom to get some video of the the river and a train passing.
Buchanan is a small town (population 1200 – 2.2 square miles) along I-81 between Lexington and Roanoke nestled in a valley in the Blue Ridge and Alleghany Mountains (hence the hiking). It is Botetourt (pronounced Bot-i-tot) County's largest incorporated town. The town is right on the Upper James River (hence the kayaking). Buchanan has cool swinging bridge that dates back to 1851.
The images below will take you to the various pages which contain descriptions and pictures of the areas I visited.
At the very bottom, you can see a map of the places I visited.
