Saturday, May 23, 2020 - Pungo Ferry Road - North Landing River

Well, welcome to the MOST BIZARRE year of our lives. 2020, sheesh.

After a full week of rain, we finally got a brief break today. And the temps were in the low 80s. So it was perfect to get out on the water.

It's tradition that the first kayaking trip of the year is at Pungo Ferry Road. The water level was fairly high, so we were able to launch from the shoreline easily. The powerboat ramp was already pretty busy when we launched but the kayak launch was empty. It would be full of people just hanging out when we returned. So much for "social distancing".

This is always a good place to paddle. Lots of options of different creeks to explore allowing as long or as short of a paddle as you want. It was a bit windy when we started out, so we were sure to paddle into the wind going out in order to have it somewhat at our backs coming back.

The water irises are starting to bloom. And lots of birds were out. We saw lots of red-winged blackbirds, osprey, hawks, and more. And lots of fish splashing along the edge of the marsh grasses ... although the guys fishing didn't seem to be having much luck catching them. :)

Since it was our first trip, we took it easy and didn't go too far. It was a great day on the water.

2 hours and 15 minutes on the water and 4.1 miles on the GPS. Scroll below the pictures to see the track map.
