Monday, May 30, 2022 - Halls Creek - Near Elizabeth City, North Carolina

Today, on the last day of the Memorial Day weekend, I decided to check out an area where I have never paddled before. I found a boat ramp near Elizabeth City, North Carolina called Halls Creek. It's a nice ramp and parking area managed by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. The ramp is concrete with a wooden temporary docking area adjacent. The site has two improved accessible parking spaces as well as space for at least 20 vehicles and trailers in the gravel parking area. There also is an accessible wooden boardwalk and a 10-by-20 foot fixed fishing pier. The ramp provides access to the Pasquotank River.

I launched from the grass bank adjacent to the concrete ramp. There were several boats waiting to retrieve their boats, but I was able to go out on the side. The water level appeared to be fairly high. You can see that it was fairly close to the bottom of the roadway crossing. I went the other way and up the Pasquotank.

There were lots of areas that had yellow lotuses growing up from the bottom of the river. The flowers are just starting to open up.

The trees lining the river were draped with Spanish Moss which made for a lovely view along the edge.

Most of this part of the river is undeveloped, but there were a few docks and platforms in a few places. There were a few power boats out, but not really that many as the part of the river I paddled was a narrow section. I imagine that most of the boaters go south toward the Albemarle Sound.

I saw lots of big fish jumping as I paddled. Hopefully, the folks that were out fishing had some luck as there appeared to be an abundant amount of fish there.

There were several pairs of Osprey nesting a prowling along the river. I also saw a lot of turtles basking in the warm sun. Speaking of warm sun, I managed to get a fair amount of sun on my arms and legs. First outing of the year = tender skin. :)

Nice first outing of the year.
