Saturday, June 15, 2019 - West Neck Creek

We launched today from West Neck Marina off West Neck Road in Virginia Beach. This creek is a tributary of North Landing River.  The marina has a concrete boat ramp that is heavily used by bass boaters, but they have carved out a small section of the sandy shoreline to launch kayaking. This makes for very easy launching.

We went north under West Neck Road and paddled up the creek to the north. It was a little windy when we started, but we hoped that once we got into more protected areas, it would lessen.

Well .... at one point, since the wind was at our backs, I was going 3 miles per hour WITHOUT PADDLING. Oops. We would pay for that on the way back.

There were lots of birds out. We saw a number of herons and LOTS of ospreys. It seems to be nesting season for the osprey. We saw several of them in and around their nests. Both the male and female osprey tend to the nests. One typically stays in the nest while the other stands guard or is out hunting/fishing.

There were a lot of cool cloud formations with a clear blue sky.

The Military Aviation Museum is not far away from where we launched, so we saw a number of small, older-style planes overhead. I'm thinking that maybe Snoopy and the Red Baron were out there. ;)

As expected, the wind was HORRIBLE on the way back. Definitely in our faces the whole time and stronger than we were on the way out. Quite a struggle to paddle through. I'm sure we will feel it tomorrow.

Great day on the water.

2.25 hours on the water and 3.9 miles on the GPS. Scroll below the pictures to see the track map.
