Sunday, July 4, 2021 - Bob's Fishing Hole - Northwest River
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!
Today, I went kayaking today on the Northwest River in Chesapeake. I launched from Bob's Fishing Hole on 168 just north of the North Carolina state line. Bob's has a couple of boat ramps that are heavily used by powerboats, but they also have an area carved out along the shoreline to launch kayaks. They only charge $2 to launch kayaks.
It was absolutely calm today especially compared to yesterday's wind. I went west from the launch and under the railroad trestle and the 168 bridge. The railroad bridge is low, so only kayaks, paddleboards, and small boats can pass under. This makes the paddling on the other side very peaceful.
I heard lots of birds but didn't see very many. And I saw a few turtles. And LOTS of dragonflies and butterflies flitting around.
As I got deeper into the smaller creeks, I saw a little bit a duckweed starting to appear on the surface of the water. It typically will get a lot thicker later in the season but doesn't generally interfere with paddling.
Lovely, peaceful day on the water.
2 hours 45 minutes on the water and 5.2 miles on the GPS. Scroll below the pictures to see the track map.
