Saturday, July 06, 2013 - Lynnhaven River - Wolfsnare Creek

Happy Birthday, Meg!  Bok bok!   The big 5 0 !

Day three (final day) of the kayaking quest.  And the culmination of "Birthday Week".

The Hansen's were gracious enough to allow us to launch from their house which sits on the Eastern Branch of the Lynnhaven River just off Brown Cove.  This was our first all saltwater trip in our own kayaks.

We brought all four kayaks so Caitlin could go with us.  Yay!

We launched just past high tide with the tide going out.  No matter what we did we were going to either launch or come back at low tide.  The Hansens are almost at the end of the creek so we knew that there would be a big swing in the water level.

We headed out amongst the crabpots and other extraneous "markers" in the creek and out into the river itself.  We headed almost directly due south toward Wolfsnare Creek.  You will note in the pictures that the scenery is decidedly less "natural" than most of our other trips.  "Bleeding money" was the description that someone gave it.  :)  But we saw a bunch of interesting stuff.

We saw a number of osprey in their nests and also flying overhead.  The ones in the nests all seemed to have fledglings with them in the nests.  They were cautiously testing out their wings in the nests.

We saw a boat named for Little Mommy.  And one house had a lighthouse at the end of the dock.  Yes, a LIGHTHOUSE.  And if that wasn't enough, they had a cannon, too.  A CANNON!!!!

When we turned onto Wolfsnare Creek, the water got considerably more shallow.  At the end where we turned around, the water only came up to about half my paddle blade.  And the mud underneath was extremely thick and sticky.

We dodged the crabpots going back up the river and had an Osprey dive down from pole right in front of us. We thought that it was going to grab Caitlin's hat!  But we were all unscathed.  :)

When we got back to the dock at the Hansen's, the tide was indeed completely out. It was straight mud up against the shore. But the nice thing out a kayak is that you don't need much water.

Thanks again to the Hansen's for allowing us to launch from their house.  Great place.  Caitlin did great.  And we left one of the kayaks so she can continue to go out on the river.

One hour and 50 minutes on the water.  3.8 miles on the GPS.  Scroll below the pictures to see the track maps.

Last day of the three days successful!!  Tomorrow ... we rest.  :)

No rain.  No wind (even though we wanted it).  Hot temperatures.  Hey, it's July.  What else did you expect?!

Great day!!
