Friday, July 20, 2018 - Indian Creek
Tomorrow is Kate's birthday, but since the weather forecast was for rain and thunderstorms all day tomorrow, we decided to take the day off from work and go out kayaking today. We originally planned to launch at the Narrows at the 64th Street side of First Landing State Park, but when we got there, it was pretty windy and choppy. So we decided to launch on Indian Creek near Northwest River Park in Chesapeake.
This creek is often muddy-looking particularly after heavy rains, but today, the water was clear. With in being a workday, there wasn't anyone parked at the launch area (which is really just a gravel patch next to a little road bridge).
As I mentioned, the water in the creek was clear. It was darkly stained with tannins, but not muddy at all. And completely calm (at least at the beginning). This made for some great reflections. I got some great shots of Kate's new paddle which is painted to look like fish scales.
We saw a GIANT Great Blue Heron that flew very low over the creek. He was HUGE!! I was able to get some shots as he was flying. Pretty spectacular bird.
We also saw lots of dragonflies. Some really tiny and others really big. Nature is awesome.
We paddle all the way down to where the creek meet the main part of the Northwest River. Then we checked out a couple of small creeks. And we looped around an island (where we had wind in our faces during the paddle) and headed back up the creek.
This was a nice, calm peaceful paddle. Great day on the water. Happy (early) Birthday, Kate!
2 hours on the water and 4.1 miles on the GPS. Scroll below the pictures to see the track map.
