Sunday, September 6, 2020 - Shingle Landing Creek - Moyock, NC

Finally, the hot summer weather has taken a break. Today the highs were in the low 80s and the humidity was in the low 60s. Great day for getting on the water.

Since today is the middle day of the holiday weekend, I decided to go down to Moyock, NC and launch from Shingle Landing and paddle down Shingle Landing Creek which is a tributary of the Northwest River.

The water level was about a foot and an half lower than normal but still plenty of water to paddle in.

There were a lot of powerboats going out, but they were all super polite as they passed me ... careful to not create too much of a wake.

The smaller, less traveled parts of the creek had some pretty thick growth of duckweed (which is typical for this time of year). It makes for some cool patterns on the water. The duckweed floats on the surface, so it doesn't create an impediment to paddling.

I saw a number of duck blinds on the water and on the edges. Most of them were in pretty good condition, so I'm guessing they will be used when the next hunting season comes up.

The highlight of the day, however, came when I was headed back up the creek. I came across a mama and two baby/yearling deer. They were feeding along the edge of the creek and creeping along. I was able to get pretty close without scaring them. Goodness, I love nature!!!

I heard lots of birds and saw a few, but surprisingly no turtles.  it was a great day on the water. The weather was perfect.

2.5 hours and 4.8 miles on the GPS. Scroll below the pictures to see the track map.
