Saturday, September 29, 2018 - Pungo ferry - North Landing River Boat Wrecks

After the hurricane that didn't come followed by a couple of weeks of up and down weather, today was supposed to have great weather with a slight chance of winds in the afternoon.

So we decided to launch at Pungo Ferry and paddle up to the upper oxbow where there are a bunch of boat and barges that have been abandoned there. We paddled straight up the river which is the shortest route to see how we felt after getting to the oxbow. It was completely calm when we launched, as you can see if the first few pictures, but soon the wind picked up a bit. It wasn't too bad, but we definitely needed to work at times.

The clouds, however, were exceptional. Lots of puffy cumulus clouds. And some wispy cirrus clouds. And the sky was clear, brilliant blue.

Along the way we, saw a bunch of big boats heading south for the winter. The North Landing River is part of the Intracoastal Waterway. Some of them created a BIG wake making some really big waves.

After checking out the boat wrecks, we were feeling okay, so we decided to come back by water of the twisty creek that parallels the main river. We only saw one boat along that entire return paddle.

We did, however, encounter a seagull who allowed us to get fairly close and I was able to get a sequence of pictures of him taking flight from his perch.

We did see Snoopy and the Red Baron flying their planes overhead. : D  I'm thinking the aviation museum nearby must have had an event going on today.  And Kate was able to use the sail a little bit in the wind on the way back.

By the time we hit the home stretch, the wind had picked up quite a bit. We had to work pretty hard to get through it, but it wasn't too bad.

Great day on the water. Great day to be outside in any capacity.

3 hours on the water and 5.4 miles on the GPS. Scroll below the pictures to see the track map.
