I'm visiting the upper Potomac River area of Virginia and Maryland in Westmoreland County, Virginia and Charles County, Maryland. I'm staying on the Potomac River in a little cottage in Newburg, Maryland.

 

I am going to visit some parks and historic sites including the birthplaces of George Washington and Robert E. Lee.

I will also be kayaking in a place called Mallows Bay which is on the Potomac and is the home of numerous World War I era wooden ships that were purposely sunk in the bay. Most of them were never used in the war. There is an effort on-going currently by NOAA to protect the area by making it a National Marine Sanctuary.

beachcombing is an attitude, an expressive metaphor for reality, an attraction and adventure, that ranges from the eager inquisitiveness of youth to the more philosophical approach that comes from gaining and spending, and being spent, by the fortunes of life, like the flotsam and jetsam along the shore.
