Sights and Sites Around Buchanan, Virginia

Here are some pictures of the cabin where I stayed on Buttons Bluff. You can see the river below and the CSX railroad bridges.

Spectacular views.

I was able to fly the Phantom right from the cabin site which was about 300 feet above the river to get some amazing views of the river. And train came!

Right in downtown Buchanan is the Buchanan Swinging Bridge. The bridge is 366 feet long and 57.5 feet tall. Portions of the bridge date back to 1851 and bore witness to the Civil War as well as numerous floods. The bridge (which is now solely a pedestrian bridge) originally had a toll for every person of five cents with an additional five cents for each horse, mule, or oxen and five cents for each wagon. The end closest to downtown Buchanan is at a severe angle. Decidedly NOT ADA compliant. ;P And the sign says not to make the bridge sway. Well, the only way to do that is not not walk on it! But it actually was fairly sturdy feeling.

Also in downtown Buchanan is the Buchanan Rail Car Inn which is a real train car that you can rent as a hotel room. Very cool.

Here are pictures of some sunrises and the fog over the mountain that was present every morning except one. And that's not a complaint at all. It was beautiful.
